Rutan-type Canard Fly-in, 2014, 25th Anniversary
KKNB, Kanab, UT

So we came back around to the one year anniversary of our first Canard fly-in as well as one year of building.  I had hoped to have a flying plane by now (mostly kidding about that), but at least we're still plugging along and have made some progress since the previous time.  As before, we had a great time.  This particular one was nicely attended as it was the 25th anniversary of the fly-in.  There was around 30 planes and about 70 people in attendance.  Some of the noteworthy attendees were Dave Ronneberg (creator of the Berkut), Mike Melville, Gary Hertzler, and Jim Price (record holder for max altitude in a single engine naturally aspirated plane at 35,027 feet), though there were many great people present.  Char and Gary Spencer put on another great fly-in but did announce their retirement from running it.  The reigns have been passed on, so we can still look forward to another great year next year.

There were several neat events that took place at this fly-in.  Our friend Keith Spreuer got married then flew up to Kanab to celebrate.  He arrived in style along with champagne to share.  The race included four berkuts this year with a total of 14 planes participating.  A few of us hiked the "hill" just outside of town where I got to go and hear great stories from David Orr, Mike Melville, and Dave Devere.  Alyssa got to fly in Dave Davere's Krossfire and I got to fly in Cookie's Cozy III (Race 65).  Of course I was there with almond roca and banana bread for the group to snack on during the evening pool side chats.

The race was exciting with the berkuts all finishing within 1 minute of each other.  In the end, Dave Ronneberg took home the golden speeding ticket during the dinner at Calvin T's.  We got our shirts again this year at T-Time but this time using one of pictures taken during the race.  It was a wonderful time just as it was before meeting with previous friends and making new friends.  We look forward to next year (maybe we'll be flying).
